Q4. Can I park and sleep in the
Motorhome wherever I want, or do I have to stay in a campground?
While it is not always necessary to go to a campground
every night we do recommend it every 3rd or 4th night to empty toilet
and wastewater tanks and replenish your fresh water. The rule of
thumb with stopping on the side of the road or bush reserve is -
so long as there are no signs saying "No Parking/Overnight
Camping" then it should be OK. Camps usually charge around
NZ$25 - $35 per night depending on numbers and they do have very
good facilities.
Q5. Where can I empty the toilet
and grey water?
Dump stations are located in camp grounds and various
tourist sites around New Zealand.
Q6. Is a special driver's licence
required to drive a motorhome or campervan in New Zealand?
No. You will need to provide a valid non-provisional
national driver's licence which has been held for at least one year.
An international driver's licence is recommended but not obligatory.
All drivers must be a minimum of 21 years-old. Drivers over the
age of 75 years must supply a recent valid medical certificate to
indicate that they do not have a health condition that would impair
their ability to drive.
Q7. What happens if the vehicle
has a mechanical breakdown?
Pacific Horizon has a 24 hour emergency freephone and
a Nationwide network of reputable service agents to deal with any
problems that may arise as quickly as possible.
Q8. Is there is a minimum hire
period?
The minimum hire period is five (7) days. Days of hire
are calculated on the number of calendar days, regardless of time
of day for pick-up or drop-off.
Q9. Is there anywhere in New Zealand
where motorhomes and campervans cannot be driven?
There are several roads recognised by the LTSA as being
unfit for rental vehicles. They are Skippers Canyon (near Queenstown),
90 mile beach (Top of the North Island) Ball Hutt (Ski area near
Christchurch). You are allowed to drive on unsealed roads although
we strongly recommend you stay on the main sealed roads.
